We invited the CEO of RJB Home, Ricardo J. Bernardes, to our blog to give his account of this partnership, which has proved to be remarkable and important over time. Find out how it all came about and how the two brands work together to make an impact on the interior design and technology market.

1 | How did the partnership with Jota Barbosa Interiors come about and what common elements did you find to make it happen?

Ricardo Bernardes: It was very natural, not only because both companies work in parallel in a common environment, with exclusive design solutions and products, but also because of the relationship of friendship that has existed between the directors for several years, that it made perfect sense for us to establish synergies between the two companies. All our solutions, whether Homelifts and Lifts, rigid Pool Covers, Automatic Parking or even our range of Art & Décor pieces (bicycles, luxury table football in glass and walnut, billiards, etc.) are designed with not only functionality in mind, but also refinement, design and elegance.

2 | What solutions does RJB HOME have to offer the market? What do you think is a gap in the market that RJB HOME is filling, and how does it stand out?

Ricardo Bernardes: RJB HOME creates and develops personalised and innovative solutions, combining the latest generation of automation and movement technology solutions with creative and personalised responses adapted to each space and the surrounding architecture. Considered by many international architects and interior designers partners to be the fathers of Kinetic Architecture, given our wide and growing range of solutions, across the entire home, hotels, public spaces, etc., RJB HOME has solutions for Rigid Pool Covers, Homelifts and Lifts, Audiovisual Solutions such as giant or small indoor or outdoor screens, Automatic Parking, among others. All developed and manufactured at our facilities in Porto (Portugal), three factories, more than 200 employees working 24 hours a day.

3 | What are RJB HOME’s strengths and differentiating features to fulfil residential solutions that make life easier and better for your customers?

Ricardo Bernardes: RJB HOME has more than 50 years’ experience, we continually invest in R&D in the boldest production and development methods and we have a solid team of highly specialised engineers with a unique ability to respond to the market. As well as being practical, RJB HOME’s solutions add value to the properties in which they are installed. For example, RJB HOME’s patented Rigid Pool Cover solutions not only make it possible to make the most of the space (dual use), but also guarantee the safety of animals and children. The same goes for the Automatic Parking solutions, developed to make life easier and better for our customers, overcoming problems such as lack of space or simply to increase the parking capacity of an existing house.

4 | What are the biggest challenges facing RJB HOME in the R&D area?

Ricardo Bernardes: The greatest difficulty will be the combination of the two worlds, industry and technology with the elegance and refinement of architecture and design. We currently have a team in which more than 45 members are architects and engineers, and these are usually intermingled worlds. We have to constantly mould the team, especially the newcomers, to pay attention to detail and ensure that the solutions work as a whole. For example, we recently installed two large Audiovisual Solutions in a seafront mansion, automatically coming out from under the garden with a 65k protection index, and each screen was around 150 inches. This would not have been possible without close coordination between architecture, design and high-precision engineering.

5 | As a company that lives the future in the present, what are RJB HOME’s main goals in the home automation segment? What are the next products to explore?

Ricardo Bernardes: We are constantly challenging ourselves to find new and better solutions to satisfy the customer and to adapt to a constantly developing market. At the moment, RJB HOME has several projects under development that will demonstrate, in the near future, how far ahead our thinking is in relation to architecture and the balance of spaces. Our commitment is always to develop and find solutions to certain obstacles or problems in today’s architecture, found in multiple real cases of RJB HOME’s clients and partners, doing so, of course, with class, refinement, design and always with movement. We stand out for our difference and extreme detail.

6 | In what way do you think your area of expertise is symbiotically intertwined with architecture and interior design?

Ricardo Bernardes: In every conceivable way. RJB HOME solutions add value to the space and are developed in parallel with architecture and interior design. RJB HOME Homelifts and Lifts, for example, are fully customised to better integrate into the space and, as well as fulfilling their primary function, they always become an integral part of it. Just like the Automatic Parking solutions, where we offer ways of making the most of the space (for example car lifts or rotating platforms), which are configured in conjunction with the architect and interior designer.

7 | Is it important at an early stage of a project for there to be planning between the interior designer and RJB HOME’s project manager?

Ricardo Bernardes: Undoubtedly, our solutions are developed to become unnoticeable in the space and better integrate into their surroundings. To this end, co-operation between the designer and the RJB HOME project manager is extremely important. However, we have a lot of projects that come to us after the start of construction, for various reasons, and in these cases our challenge becomes even greater to integrate all the elements into the space.
