The dining room can be a very prominent room in your home. This is the space where friends and family gather to celebrate the best moments and where the best meals and memories are served. Regardless of the season, this is an excellent meeting place and for that purpose it is important to invest in furniture pieces that do justice to everything you expect for this environment.
When choosing the ideal dining table think about what it will be used for, what shape is most convenient, as well as the material. The design of this piece will be the responsibility of your taste and personality. We give here some tips how to position and choose a dining table that is your face. Stay tuned!
Shapes
Rectangular
Without a doubt the most common format, rectangular dining tables are usually preferred because they can accommodate a large number of people. Their linear shape allows ample space to move around the table. Consider that this table format may be too large for tighter environments, being a more interesting option in a larger dining room.
Square
The shape of this dining table works perfectly in a square dining room, with a smaller group of people, between 4 to 6. In several cases, a square dining table will adopt an elegant look when placed in a long, narrow room, since it offers a sense of exact proportion. You can accompany it with a rug, thus emphasizing a harmonious and balanced image.
In the Arouca Apartments project, the interior design team interconnected the kitchen and dining area with square dining tables, which provided a better use of space.
Oval
Oval dining tables excel in a curious quirk: they create a distinct visual interest through their rounded corners, which trigger an illusion that they take up less space. The curves help counteract the tendency for linear outlines in a room, providing intimacy and flexibility. A sure bet is to use this piece to gather a large group of people together in a smaller space, for example.
Round
This style of dining table is one of the best ways to group all your guests in a smaller space. This feature allows everyone at the table to easily converse with each other, culminating in a more casual atmosphere.
Consider that this furniture feature is not the best for large groups. A large round table means that even though you can see everyone, they are simultaneously far apart.
Extendable
If a large table is not what you need at the moment, but you like to provide good times for your friends, then an extendable table is the perfect solution. Measure your space and account for this extension to position your design piece in the best possible way.
Materials
While there is no right or wrong choice, careful selection of the material of your dining table can determine whether you have a piece for life or just for a while. There are a wide variety of materials you can decide on and have fun with, such as wood, metal, marble, or ceramic. The advisable thing is to choose the materials you like best first, and then narrow down your list as they become the most suitable for your lifestyle and taste.
Wood
This material, besides producing a feeling of warmth and personality, has an irrefutable asset, its resistance. A good dining table can last a lifetime if it is correctly estimated, and in the case of wood the expectations are even higher.
Like the style of the dining table design, the materials should be chosen to complement the decor of the room and to serve the needs of those who live there. Rustic styles look more interesting with wooden furniture, while more modern ones contrast with glass, marble and iron surfaces to combine an aesthetic with attitude.
Glass
A glass table is the perfect option if you have a small dining room. The glass top can easily match any base, and you can customize your piece in whatever way is most convenient for you. This type of material will allow you not to worry about damage such as heat, water or stains, and it is simple and easy to clean.
Marble or Ceramic
Marble or ceramic is another option for a stable dining table that will work well in both a contemporary and traditional setting. Pay attention to the protection you will have on the table, as a stain can damage the top. Also take into account how often you can move it, marble is not only extremely heavy, but it is also expensive.
Like wood, marble is also extremely durable, and if cared for properly, will easily stand the test of time. Scratches and dents can sometimes be seen on a matte marble table. To avoid any dents we suggest putting a sealant on it to ensure your piece stays beautiful and weather resistant.
Style
For a cohesive aesthetic throughout the house, choose a dining table that matches the rest of the decor you already have. Tables with more organic shapes, for example, go well with many modern styles, adding a sophisticated touch. Metal dining tables, with exposed supports, are a perfect fit in more industrial settings.
When it comes to dining table designs, the choice is endless. From classic to minimalist to modern contemporary, they have a whole world waiting for them. Minimalist design focuses on the principle of simplicity and spaciousness, with a greater focus on strength and durability.
Modern dining tables are characterized by curved sides and corners, elegance, and sober lines. Glass and metals realize this concept in its fullest state. In a more classic style the intuition falls on dining tables made entirely of wood.
Measurements
The size of the dining table should match the size of your room so that the proportion aligns. In this regard it is convenient to keep in mind some key measurements to feel comfortable sitting at the table, and also to enjoy your mealtime in the best way.
A dining chair should have a seating area of 40 x 50 centimeters and this seat should be 41 to 45 centimeters.
The table: The tabletop should be 72 to 75 centimeters from the floor. The distance between the underside of the tabletop and the floor should be at least 63 centimeters, in order to provide space for legs to stand comfortably underneath.
A round table for 4-5 people should be at least 110 centimeters in diameter, a table for 6 people should have a minimum diameter of 120 centimeters, and a table for 8 people should have one of 150 centimeters.
How many people will eat at the table? Count on an area of 60 x 35 centimeters per person, so that they have room for the plate, the cutlery, and the glass.
Leave a minimum distance of 70 centimeters between the set formed by the dining table and chairs and the wall or other furniture, so you can pull the chair back and sit down without problems.
