Making advantage of the attic

30 May 2022

When you think of an attic, you are usually associated with a messy, disorganised space, with everything you want to throw away, but don’t have the courage. Many times this idea is not far from reality, but with some creativity you can totally change the game sa situation.

Before taking action, analyse the rooms in your home in order to make the best possible use of them, so that the final result is in line with what you had planned.

Learn now how to give a new life to your attic and make it your favourite space in the house.

Defining the space

Before you move on to choosing which space you will transform your loft into, there are a few details you should consider.

One of the advantages of this type of space is that it can easily go from a simple storage place to something more sophisticated, practical and cosy. A guest or entertainment room, a wardrobe, a library, a living room, a home office, or even a cinema room are some of the possibilities at your disposal. All you have to do is decide what you want to use it for, taking into account your needs and the physiognomy of the space.

The first step is to define the intended environment, in order to take advantage of all the available space. It is also important to take accurate measurements, so that there are no gaps.

Attention to detail

This is a room that is located in the highest part of the house and therefore it is convenient to pay attention to height, insulation and lighting. As a general rule there are no side windows but skylights are excellent for an incredible natural light, as well as ventilation.

The attic is a stunning space for several reasons, one of them being the unusual architectural lines of the roof that form the ceiling of this space. The interesting thing is to try to highlight these lines with strong colours or materials such as wood, in order to create an impactful visual dimension.

If your attic is small, go for soft and neutral colours to expand the space.

Bedroom

One of the best ways to make the most of your attic is to turn it into an extra bedroom.  This transformation can provide a bedroom for guests, or if you have a large family, a further single room.

Add a bed and furniture that matches the attic interior, and you have a brand new bedroom that is sure to surprise your guests.

Office

We don’t always have the possibility to spend a room to create an office and it is not always convenient to integrate this space in the living room. As a solution we have the reuse of the attic. Try to create organization strategies that will help you in your daily routine, distributing the furniture in order to maximize the entrance of natural light.

If you have this possibility, place the desk near a window. If you don’t have a window, you can always rely on artificial lighting, using simple lamps.

Library

This option will be the most loved by those who love reading. The attic is a space that stands out for its silence, which in comparison with the other rooms of the house, prevails a differentiated tranquillity. The sum of this particularity with the fascination for books combines in a transformed environment, perfect for this more secluded moment

Cinema

Who has never dreamed of a home cinema? This type of space is incredible to relax and unwind at the end of the day without anyone disturbing you. Invest in a comfortable sofa, a good television, a soft carpet and, of course, blankets. To add a more comfortable intimacy you can choose to put opaque curtains, in order to decrease the intensity of the exterior lighting.

Playroom

If the children’s room doesn’t have much space for toys, why not reuse the attic to create a playroom? It will certainly be the children’s favourite space. Some shelves for storage and some sofas/puffs are must-have pieces in this type of room. However, for safety’s sake, it’s best to ensure that the space is safe, this means that the stairs should be protected and, if necessary, should have a guard.

Gym

With exercise being a healthy lifestyle and a shared taste by many, why not invest in a gym for your loft home? Transform your space by choosing a minimalist and simple decoration, placing your workout equipment. You can add mirrors to the space so you can correct your posture while you exercise and some plants to give a more relaxed feel.

Mezzanine

Mezzanine is a level of the building situated between the ground floor and the first floor, usually with an access staircase. The use of mezzanines gives the environment a more modern and elegant air, and the structure may be made of wood, cement or iron.

The rule here is to follow the premise “less is more” when it comes to interior design in order to achieve a balanced result. Bet on a spacious bed, not too high, in neutral tones and few decorative elements. A soft rug will be an excellent idea to feel a unique comfort in this space.
