There are some premises that you should take into consideration before choosing the ideal wallpaper for your space, from the place where you will apply as colour, material, pattern and even texture. This note that fills your walls is enough to give your decorative style personality, if you prefer a sense of spaciousness to the environment or even a more intimate and discreet atmosphere.

Learn now how to choose the right wallpaper for your home and be dazzled!

Selection by colour

The atmosphere of a space will depend on the shades of the wallpaper you choose, and based on this assumption it is important to select a colour that matches the energy you want to create in your environments.

For example, if you prefer that your space transmits freshness and harmony opt for wallpapers with soft tones and pale shades such as blue, green, grey. On the other hand, prioritize warm colours like red, yellow, orange, if you want to favour a warmer and cosier aura to your corners.

Wallpaper colour

Combinations of beige, yellow, orange, red – For living rooms and living areas, as these colours are warm and welcoming.

Bright red, peach, brown, green – For the kitchen, as these colours are a combination of energy and stimulation.

Green, turquoise, deep orange and saffron – For dining rooms, as they influence the appetite.
All lighter shades of pink, blue, grey, white – For the master bedroom, as they bring tranquility, relaxation and also stimulate rest.

All bright colours like orange, pink, blue, green, yellow, lavender – For the children’s room, as they are nourishing and youthful.

All noble colours like pink, emerald green, dark purple – For guest rooms, as they can make your guests feel more welcome and comfortable.

Selection by Textures

Textured wallpapers help to omit flaws in the wall, camouflaging some imperfections of the wall as architectural. Textures materialise an excellent complement to give your walls some dimension, bringing greater depth and visual interest.

When it comes to options, they are unlimited. From more versatile solutions, to those that fill the space with their presence, the perfect texture will always be the one that has part of your personality and that harmoniously blends with your decoration.  The texture can be visual – felt by the visual sense or tactile texture – felt by the sense of touch.

Type of Application of Textured Wallpaper

Wallpapers with rough texture – For high-traffic spaces.

Smooth textured wallpaper – For spaces that show less wear and tear from time and use.
Glossy textured wallpaper – For spaces without windows.
Matt textured wallpaper – For spaces with plenty of natural light.
Natural textured wallpaper – For spaces where you want to create a rustic style.

Pattern Selection

One of the big difficulties you may experience in patterning the perfect wallpaper is figuring out if it works well for your space and your needs. Patterned wallpapers disguise imperfections in the wall surface, and also help to make the room more relaxed.

A general rule when selecting patterns is that they should match the architecture of the space, your lifestyle and other elements such as windows, carpets, cushions. The furniture you insert in these spaces should interconnect with your chosen wallpaper so you don’t feel the room is visually overloaded.

Applying patterns

Horizontal patterns – For narrow spaces that need to look wider (but can also make the ceiling look shorter).
Vertical patterns – For spaces where the ceiling should appear higher than it actually is.
Large patterns – For large, spacious spaces and best suited for a wall covering in a large room.
Small Patterns – For small, tight spaces.
Floral Patterns – For bedrooms or more feminine spaces.
Geometric Patterns – For home office spaces.
Bold patterns – For living room and kitchen.

Selection by Material

Material is one of the main deciding factors when selecting wallpaper. There are many types of materials from which wallpapers are made and each has different properties and application processes.

Application of wallpaper material

Vinyl wallpaper – For high-traffic spaces, due to its highly washable property.
Fabric wallpapers – For luxurious spaces derived from their elegant look.
Non-woven fabric wallpapers (TNT) – For any type of space due to its user-friendly nature.
Foil Wallpapers – For only highly smooth walls as they easily reveal imperfections.
Natural Bamboo Wallpapers – For environments that require a more natural look.
Grass-Cloth Wallpaper- For any type of space, due to its durability and easy washing.
Flock Wallpapers- For bedroom, guest room, living room, or dining room due to its fluffy velvet texture.

Wallpaper Application

1st step – Wall evaluation

At this stage it is necessary to check if the wall is flat and if the surface is stable. If not, it will be necessary to adjust it so that everything is uniform.

Step 2 – Preparing the wall

This is the moment to make the wall ready to receive the paper. In order to do that, first of all, make sure that all the reliefs are uniform and make sure that it is well leveled. If there are other problems such as holes, infiltration, mold, etc., make sure to address this situation to be able to put your wallpaper.

Also, you need to measure the wall to know precisely how many rolls you will need to buy. Measure the height and length of the area. Then we will move on to marking the place of application, with the help of a pencil decal vertical guide lines on the walls, so that nothing escapes you.

Step 3 – Preparing the paper

In this step we have a very important point: the beginning of the pattern. If the paper is stamped it is essential that you identify the beginning before doing any cutting, because if there was any mistake in this step, the whole result will be compromised.

So, visualise the stamping completely and understand when your pattern starts and ends. Afterwards, simulate where it would be best to start gluing. In the case of large prints, it is best to start in the middle.

Place the paper on a table and unroll it. Using a pencil, mark on the paper the measurements you made earlier. Here, it is extremely important to count 5 centimetres more on the upper and lower part of the strip.

Step 4 – Gluing time

In this step it is important to have or a brush, glue, spatula, roller, x-ato and some utensils to help you throughout this process.

Use the spatula to press the creases and corners on the baseboard and ceiling. Then, use an x-acto to cut the rest. Once that’s done, apply the glue with the roller over the wallpaper and let it dry. Then, go to the wall with the folded paper and start gluing from the top. Then, unfold the paper and glue it so that it unfolds to the bottom.
Then, smooth out the paper in order to eliminate any large bubbles. Use a brush to do the same with the smaller ones. With the help of the spatula, remove the excess glue from the middle to the edges. Repeat this step with the other strips.
